BAM (aka Afrika Baby Bam) of the legendary '90s hip-hop group JUNGLE BROTHERS and Austrian DJ and producer MR.DERO team up to take the positive hip hop vibes of the Native Tongues Era to 2015.
As one might remember: Hip hop started out at a party. Fat beats for the summer and raps that are not all about bragging, but turning the party out – that's the flavour Bam & Mr.Dero go for on their concept collabo 'THIS & THAT', combining 2 EPs ('THIS' and 'THAT') to 1 strong album, rounded up by two music videos and a stunning concept artwork, which haswon numerous inernational design awards and clearly displays their love for art and detail.
Both of them know perfectly well what they're doing: Austrian hip hop enthusiast Mr.Dero has been spinning, producing and organizing club nights for eighteen years now and knows what's moving dancefloors. And Bam aka Afrika Baby Bam? He's nothing short of a living legend. As a part of New York rap crew Jungle Brothers he helped creating a movement that still has an impact on hip hop culture today: the Native Tongues. Together with fellow artists A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah and Black Sheep the JBeez started a positive, good-humored, yet conscious counter movement against all those grimey looking, gold chain wearing bad boy rappers that still influences young artists today.
In their transatlantic collabo project Bam & Mr.Dero picked up that thread and produced tracks that are as dope as danceable. Since they met and became friends at one of Dero's label club nights, they've been working together to bring back that positive vibe from the Native Tongues era in a very original fashion. Catchy production with a heavy bass, soulful grooves, feelgood vibes and Bam, who's definitely having fun in the booth – that's their album 'THIS & THAT'.
Their single This & That feat. Klumzy Tung (UK) was premiered by Austrian national radio FM4 and is currently at position nr. 12 in their radio charts! Read their story HERE.
Their new video is shot in New York and is an homage to Bam´s legendary Hip Hop history.
Single Release of 1st EP (2014).
No photoshop - real photos!
Old and broken instruments and musical items were collected, painted and contructed to form huge letters. Most items were fixed in the ceiling and slackened using nylon strings. The characters themselves were printed on transparent paper and placed in front of the camera lense. Like that the individual items of the installation could be positioned by looking through the camera and so the objects could be fixed in the room. All items were precisely hung, put or placed into the depth of the room, so that they result in the final cover image, when looked at from one exact perspectice angle. No retouching or photoshop! Concept and implementation by Simon Lemmerer and Stefan Leitner.
